How The Training Model Works
Our approach connects structured learning, hands-on practice and on-the-job experience. Students learn in real environments, develop practical and life skills, and prepare for employment in sectors linked to Sri Lanka's maritime and technical economy.
Our Programs
Multiskilled Programme
The Multiskilled Programme is designed to prepare versatile, workforce-ready young people through a combination of theory, practical training and on-the-job experience. Over the first phase of the programme, students follow a structured curriculum across multiple technical disciplines. The final stage is dedicated to practical industry exposure in a real workshop environment. The programme is supported by essential subjects such as engineering basics, English and mathematics, helping students build both technical competencies and broader life skills.
Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Programme
This programme offers a more focused pathway into technical and marine manufacturing environments. Students begin with theory and practical classes covering key materials, methods and workshop processes, before moving into hands-on workplace learning alongside experienced professionals. Like all BAFF training pathways, the programme combines technical development with essential subjects that strengthen both professional readiness and personal growth.
Certified in Partnership with NAITA
BAFF works in partnership with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority, under Sri Lanka's Tertiary and Vocational Education framework. This collaboration helps ensure that successful trainees receive recognised certification and stronger pathways towards employment.nd continues through a long-term commitment to rebuilding lives, strengthening communities and creating opportunities through practical work.

Our Training Centres
Kabalana
Located on Sri Lanka's southern coast, the Kabalana training centre is BAFF's original learning site. It combines theoretical teaching and practical workshop-based training in disciplines with strong development potential for the country. Over the years, hundreds of young people have benefited from training here in areas linked to technical work, boat building and broader vocational skills.

Poonakari / Jaffna
In the Northern region, BAFF is developing a new training centre in Poonakari to extend access to vocational learning and employment pathways in an area deeply affected by the legacy of conflict. The goal is to replicate and adapt the successful model developed in the South, while creating new opportunities for Tamil youth in a region with strong untapped potential.
This centre is being developed with the ambition of gradually increasing annual intake and building a long-term training and employment ecosystem linked to the growth of the local maritime sector.
Ruhunu Sailing Association
Alongside technical and vocational training, BAFF also supports youth development through sailing. The Ruhunu Sailing Association introduces young people to the sport at grassroots level, helping them develop confidence, discipline, responsibility and teamwork while building awareness of the marine environment. Lessons are delivered with support from local and foreign trainers, and regattas are organised in collaboration with sailing bodies in Sri Lanka to give children the opportunity to progress and compete.
